Dale Carnegie (1988-1955)
Over 25 years ago I took a Dale Carnegie course, along with other colleagues in my school district. That early experience served as an impetus for further reading, study, and reflection on topics of self-improvement and subsequently leadership. For those who know nothing of Dale Carnegie, a pioneer in public speaking and personality development, allow me to provide a brief overview. In his day he was a prominent lecturer and newspaper columnist who also had his own daily radio show. According to Wikipedia, he was “…the developer of famous courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking and interpersonal skills.” A training program based upon his books was begun in 1912, continues to this day, and is represented in over 75 countries. To date approximately 7 million people have completed Dale Carnegie Training. Carnegie’s most well known book How to win friends and influence people (first published in 1936) is a “classic”. HIPPA In A Nutshell
By Karen Copeland kbcopeland@sbcglobal.net |
| |
HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a federal law passed in 1996.
Title II of the Act provides for administrative simplification that requires the development of standards for the electronic exchange of health care information. Administrative simplification also requires rules to protect the privacy of personal health information and the establishment of security requirements to protect that information and the development of standard identifiers.

| Book Review |

The following book and video reviews are from the KEYSTATER, FALL 97 II. Medical Speech-Language Pathology: A Practitioner’s Guide (1998). Alex F. Johnson & Barbara H. Jacobson (Eds.).Thieme, 333 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10001. ISBN: 0-86577-688-1. 712 pages. $79. (Reviewed in Mar/Apr ‘99 MSHA News.)
The authors state in the preface that this book, "could serve as a comprehensive text for a course in medical speech-language pathology. It can also function as a support text for traditional courses in dysphagia, aphasia, voice, or motor speech disorders ... and most importantly, this book has been designed to serve as a support text for the clinical practitioner…

Surfing the Net
By Ricky W. Burk rburk@netten.net |
| |
Over the past several months, I have been amazed how many clinicians I have spoken with who say that they are utilizing the web in therapy. So often we tend to think of the web as a "research" tool, and turn the computer off when we are finished searching. Have you tried using the web in voice, fluency, articulation, or language therapy? If not, there’s a challenge waiting for your use of clinical skills in adapting to the inclusion of this new tool. Well, here’s a list to get you jump started, and as usual, it’s a combination of "research/info" style sites as well as some interactive ones…

The Application of Counseling Theory to Clinical Supervision: Enhancing the Effectiveness of Supervision
By Lori K. Amon, M.A./CCC, P.D. – Hofstra University |
| |
Supervision in the field of Communication Disorders has been defined as "…a process that consists of a variety of patterns of behavior…dependent upon the needs, competencies, expectations and philosophies of the supervisor and the supervisee, and the specifics of the situation…" (Anderson, 1998). Historically, however, research has been limited in it’s ability to define the means by which supervisors can develop skill and competency in effecting behavior change in their students and, ultimately their clients. Supervision has actually been given relatively little attention in the literature and has only, in the last decade, begun to be incorporated into educational programs…

Surviving Under the Medicare Prospective Payment System
By Ellayne Ganzfried, Member-at-large, Speech-Hospitals & Agencies |
| |
As we pass the one year anniversary of the initiation of the Medicare Prospective Payment System (PPS), I thought it would be appropriate to review the components of PPS and discuss the impact it has made upon the professions. It is believed that many professionals have limited understanding of PPS unless they are practicing in those settings in which PPS is the new way of life...

MULTICULTURALISM: What’s the big deal?
by Luis F. Riquelme |
| |
It is quite scary to think that in 1999 there are still many colleagues in New York State who yet do not understand the impact of multiculturalism in our practices as communicologists. For many of us, it only takes a look out the window to realize how culturally and linguistically diverse our surroundings are: for others, a simple look into their waiting rooms may suffice…

Lobbying: To Do or Not To Do
by Luis F. Riquelme |
| |
Feelings of anxiety, fear and intimidation come to many of us upon the thought of lobbying in Albany. We wonder how we’ll know what to say, how we’ll know all the issues, why would a legislator or staff person listen to us, and how will we follow appropriate political protocol. Yes, anxiety, fear and intimidation still come to mind. Until you lobby once, you will not conquer these feelings…

A Systems Approach to Service Delivery
by Tina Radichel, M.S., CCC-SLP |
| |
Everywhere you turn lately, we seem to be on the brink of something. We teeter endlessly on the brink of the next phase, the next generation, the next millennium. The intent appears to be to motivate, to inspire, and to occasionally scare us into action, new thinking, or new responsibilities. While different time periods do exist in history, they connect much more fluidly than a simplistic view of separate “pieces” of time attached end to end. Observing relationships between trends, elements, and phases—historical or otherwise—creates a different approach to thinking: systems thinking. When individual elements are allowed to exist and function separately, they are completely out of context. In systems thinking, however, everything is connected...
